Start with the space actually available for your mouse, then consider how the surface feels. There is no universal minimum size for FPS games: your movements and sensitivity settings matter more than a format label.
A surface that suits the way you play
The surface affects how the mouse glides and how easily you stop it. Think about your usual movements: broad arm sweeps, small wrist adjustments or a combination of both.
Cloth or a hard surface?
A cloth pad feels soft under your hand and comes in different glide characteristics. A hard surface feels firmer. Your mouse feet, the condition of the pad and personal preference also affect the result: material alone does not determine precision.
Check the compatibility information from your mouse manufacturer and keep the surface clean. An even, clear area helps you maintain familiar movements from one session to the next.
Choose the size around your movements
DPI alone does not determine the size you need. Your sensitivity settings in the game or operating system also matter. Instead, look at how far your mouse travels during your usual movements.
- Short movements: a compact pad may work if you leave enough room around the mouse.
- Wide movements: allow a larger clear area, accounting for the space occupied by your keyboard.
- Keyboard and mouse on one mat: measure the whole setup, then check the space left for moving the mouse.
A large pad can be useful for low-sensitivity FPS play, but 90 × 40 cm is not a mandatory minimum. A mouse-only pad may provide enough room for your settings.
Thickness, stability and everyday comfort
Thickness changes how the pad feels under your hand and how high its edge sits above the desk. On its own, it does not guarantee comfort or performance.
- The base: the pad should stay stable on your desk while you move.
- The edges: consider their finish and where your forearm rests.
- Your posture: keep a natural position, with room for the keyboard and accessories.
If you work and play at the same desk, prioritise an arrangement that feels comfortable over time.
Match the size to your setup, not just your game
The type of game is a starting point, but two players of the same game can have very different needs.
- FPS: make sure your sweeps and changes of direction stay on the pad.
- MOBA, MMO and desk work: compare the space your movements need with the space you want to keep free.
- Streaming or a coordinated setup: a desk mat can bring the keyboard and mouse together visually, as long as it fits the available area.
Before ordering, mark out the proposed size on your desk with paper or a measuring tape. Check that it does not interfere with the monitor stand or other accessories.
A design that feels like you
A photo, illustration, logo or the colours of your setup can complete your choice of size. Think about which parts will remain visible once your keyboard and mouse are in place.
